If you are VAT registered, every invoice you send has to carry more than a number and a total. HMRC expects a full VAT invoice to show your business name and address, your VAT registration number, an invoice date and a unique sequential invoice number, your customer's name and address, a description of what you supplied, and — the part people get wrong — the amount charged excluding VAT, the VAT rate applied, and the VAT amount shown separately.
Most free invoice tools leave you to arrange all of that yourself in a generic template. InvoiceIt's VAT invoice generator lays it out correctly by default: enter your VAT number once, pick the rate — 20% standard, 5% reduced, or no VAT — and the subtotal, VAT line and total are calculated and positioned the way an accountant expects to see them.
Most goods and services in the UK carry the standard 20% rate. The 5% reduced rate covers specific categories such as domestic energy and certain renovation work, and some supplies are zero-rated or exempt entirely. The rate is determined by what you supplied, not by preference — if you are unsure which applies to your work, check HMRC's guidance on VAT rates or ask your accountant before sending. The generator does the arithmetic for whichever rate you choose; choosing the right rate is the part only you can do.
The generator shows your invoice building live on screen — VAT breakdown included — so you can see exactly what your client will receive before you download it. The finished PDF is clean, professional and free, with no account required.
